A bong stem, also called a downstem, is a vital part of a bong or water pipe. It's a long tube-shaped piece made of glass or metal that connects the bowl to the water chamber. The downstem draws the smoke into the water chamber, where it gets filtered, cooled, and moisturized before reaching the mouthpiece. It's essential for delivering smooth, flavourful hits by effectively filtering the smoke and providing better filtration, improved flavour, and smoother hits.

To insert a bong stem, fill the base with cold or room temperature water, making sure the percolator is slightly submerged. Place the bowl into the downstem snugly but not too tightly. If there's a carb, remove the bowl before smoking. Once the downstem is in place, fill the bowl with your chosen material. To clean a bong stem, first determine if it's removable or fixed. If removable, gently pull it out and rinse under warm water. For a fixed stem, empty the water and proceed. Soak the removable downstem in isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt for 30 minutes. For a fixed downstem, add the alcohol-salt mixture into the water chamber. After soaking, shake the removable stem in a sealed bag or shake the bong with covered openings for a fixed stem. Use a pipe cleaner to remove stubborn build-up, then rinse with warm water. Ensure thorough drying before reassembling for a clean smoking experience.
